How To Remove SMD IC

I have a repair friend who does not have SMD rework station so what he did was he made sure that the SMD IC is at fault then he use a cutter to cut out all the SMD IC pins. He then clean the circuit line with the help of soldering paste. Once done he put the new SMD IC on the board and carefully solder it with the help of solder wick. The result was as good as if someone use a rework station. He could do that because he was very sure the SMD IC was infact faulty and he has the part.
If you have a junk board, you could follow the way he used in removing and putting back SMD IC. Now who says without SMD Rework station one cannot replace SMD IC? He already done that and you could do it too
