Hacks And Tricks To Double Your Internet Browsing Speed On Firefox



We know that Firefox is fast but for some, they’re not satisfied with it and they want to make it faster and with these tricks/hacks that I found, it may double your internet browsing speed on Firefox! Maybe you’re curious why did I say “may double your internet browsing speed”, it’s because for some people, this trick works and for others, it didn’t.
Check out these hacks and increase your internet browsing speed:

Reduce the amount of RAM Firefox uses for it’s cache feature:
1) Type “about:config” (no quotes) in the address bar in the browser.
2) Find “browser.sessionhistory.max_total_viewers”
3) Set it’s value to “0“;(Zero)

Increase the Speed in Which Firefox loads pages
1) Type “about:config” into the address bar and hit Enter. (Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading.)
2) Alter the entries as follows:
Set “network.http.pipelining” to “true”
Set “network.http.proxy.pipelining” to “true”
Set “network.http.pipelining.maxrequests” to some number like 10.
This means it will make 10 requests at once.
3) Lastly, right-click anywhere and select New->Integer. Name it “nglayout.initialpaint.delay” and set its value to “0“;(Zero)
This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it receives. If you’re using a broadband connection you’ll load pages faster now.
Optionally (for even faster web browsing) here are some more options for your about:config (you might have to create some of these entries by Right Click –> New– >Interger or String
“network.dns.disableIPv6”: set “false”
“content.notify.backoffcount”: set “5”; (Five)
“ui.submenuDelay”: set “0”; (Zero)

Reduce RAM usage to 10mb when Firefox is minimized
This little hack will drop Firefox’s RAM usage down to 10 Mb when minimized:
1) Open Firefox and go to the Address Bar. Type in about:config and then press Enter.
2) Right Click in the page and select New -> Boolean.
3) In the box that pops up enter “config.trim_on_minimize”. Press Enter.
4) Now select True and then press Enter.
5) Restart Firefox.

Computer mouse tips



Using the mouse in combination with the keys on your keyboard can give you several different advantages and help improve your overall productivity on the computer. Below are just a few examples.

Almost all text editors

Many text editors or programs that allow you to edit text support the ability to quickly highlight all or portions of text by using the Shift key and the mouse. For example, move the cursor to the beginning of the text you wish to highlight, hold down the shift key, and click at the end of the text you wish to highlight. If supported and done properly this will highlight all text in-between the points you clicked.

Microsoft Word

In Microsoft Word holding down the ALT key on your keyboard while clicking and dragging your mouse and you will be able to drag a box and highlight only portions of text and not the whole line.

Windows Explorer and many other file

Microsoft Windows Explorer and other file managing programs allow users to select multiple files by holding down the CTRL key and clicking each file or folder they wish to select or hold down the shift key and selecting multiple files at once.

Microsoft Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, and other browsers

Users who visit a website with tables and wish to only select one row of that table can hold down the CTRL key and click and drag on the text in the row they wish to copy.

Mozilla Firefox users

You often hear the word Cookie while talking about your PC’s Health. Well, a web
cookie or browser cookie is a small portion of text that gets saved on a client’s computer by any web browser.

A cookie contains one or more named value pairs that hold crumbs of data like user preferences, usernames that are logged-in, session identifier or additional data that are needed by the websites on Internet. All these cookies are stored on your client’s machine like any other file. It is very important that they should be cleaned up at regular intervals so that it can free your disk space and fill up all the security loopholes. This process is very important to optimize your PC Health. The process of removing these cookies depends on your web browsers that are used by the client.

To delete Cookies from Mozilla Firefox, you just need to follow these simple steps:

Mozilla Firefox

1. Firstly open your Mozilla Firefox browser
2. Click Tools from your browser’s menu bar.
3. Then Select Options
4. Select Privacy from your listed tabs
5. In your History panel, click Show Cookies or Remove Individual Cookies

Three Major Differences of Win 7 and Windows Xp



The worry for any IT department when upgrading to a new version of application/software is how it will be accepted by users. How To Stop The Physical Memory Dump Error - Stop The Blue Screen



The physical memory dump error is a big problem which affects even the most advanced of computer systems. Although it's quite a rare error, it's one of the most devastating, stopping what you're doing and restarting your computer - making you lose all your unsaved data. This is a big problem, but there is actually a very easy way to fix it.

You see, there are two reasons why the physical memory dump happens. The first is pretty simple and is to do with the "hardware" of your PC. The hardware of your computer are the bits-and-pieces that make it work, and if any of these pieces are not compatible with your system, it will cause the physical memory dump. So, if you've recently added any hardware to your PC (even USB drives), then take that out and see if it does it again.

The other reason why the physical memory dump error occurs is because of your system, and more specifically, the 'registry'. The registry is a big database which operates in the background of Windows, storing all sorts of settings and information about your PC. The problem with the registry is that since it has so many important files inside, it's constantly got 100's of files open every time you use your PC. And because there are so many files open at once, Windows is constantly getting confused, leading it to save many of these files in the wrong way.

The registry causes the physical memory dump error because of these files which are saved in the wrong way. You see, these files become corrupt when they are saved wrongly, making them incredibly difficult for your computer to read. This means that the next time Windows wants to open these files, it has to spend longer and longer trying to decipher them. 6 Tips for Protecting Your PC from Virus Attacks

7 segment rolling display using PC


It is very interesting and convenient to be able to control everything while sitting at your PC terminal. Here, a simple hardware circuit and software is used to interface a 7-segment based rolling display. The printer port of a PC provides a set of points with some acting as input lines and some others as output lines.
Some lines are open collector type which can be used as input lines. The circuit given here can be used for interfacing with any type of PC’s printer port. The 25-pin parallel port connector at the back of a PC is a combination of three ports. The address varies from 378H-37AH. The 7 lines of port 378H (pins 2 through 8) are used in this circuit to output the code for segment display through IC1. The remaining one line of port 378H (pin 9) and four lines of port 37AH (pins 1, 14, 16, 17) are used to enable the display digits (one a time) through IC2. The bits D0, D1 and D3 of port 37AH connected to pins 1, 14 and 17 of ‘D’ connector are inverted by the computer before application to the pins while data bit D2 is not inverted. Therefore to get a logic high at any of former three pins, we must send logic 0 output to the corresponding pin of port 37AH. Another important concept illustrated by the project is the time division multiplexing. Note that all the five 7-segment displays share a common data bus. The PC places the 7-segment code for the first digit/character on the data bus and enables only the first 7-segment display. After delay of a few milliseconds, the 7-segment code for the digit/character is replaced by that of the next charter/digit, but this time only second display digit is enabled. After the display of all characters/digits in this way, the cycle repeats itself over and over again. Because of this repetition at a fairly high rate, there is an illusion that all the digits/characters are continuously being displayed. DISP1 is to be physically placed as the least significant digit. IC1 (74LS244) is an octal buffer which is primarily used to increase the driving capability. It has two groups of four buffers with non-inverted tri-state outputs. The buffer is controlled by two active low enable lines. IC2 (75492) can drive a maximum of six 7-segment displays. (For driving up to seven common-cathode displays one may use ULN2003 described elsewhere in this section.) The program for rolling display is given in the listing DISP.C above. Whatever the message/characters to be displayed (here five characters have been displayed), these are separated and stored in an array. Then these are decoded. Decoding software is very simple. Just replace the desired character with the binary equivalent of the display code. The display code is a byte that has the appropriate bits turned on. For example, to display character ‘L’, the segments to be turned on are f, e and d. This is equivalent to 111000 binary or 38 hex. Please note that only limited characters can be formed using 7-segment display. Characters such as M, N and K cannot be formed properly

Use the CD-ROM drive as a audio CD player without the computer



Most of the CDROMS available have an Audio-Out Output to either plug in the headphones or connect it to an amplifier.This circuit enables one to use the CDROM as a stand alone Audio CD player without the computer.This circuit is nothing but a power supply which supplies +5v, +12V and Ground to the CDROM drive and
hence can be used without the computer.


You should buy a D-type power connecter to connect this circuit's outputs to the CDROM. The details of the D connector are shown along with the circuit diagram. Note that the D-connector goes into the CDROM in only one way and hence prevents any damage due to wrong connection. Ensure that the 12V(yellow) wire is connected to the right of the D-connector(as seen from behind ,i.e the connector holes away from you with the curved portion of the connector upwards) As soon as an Audio CD is inserted, the CD begins to play. To move to the next track, press the Skip-Track button on the CDROM front Panel

Computer power supply problem can be categorize into 5 parts ie; no power, low output power, high output power, intermittent no power and power shut down (fan turned for a while and stop). Troubleshooting and repair computer power supply now compare to last time was totally different. Those days, the power supply were quite expensive and worth to repair and power supply parts like the TL494 and the LM339 were easily accessible. But now, it has lots of different and complicated designs and cheap too that makes me stop repairing them.

Not only that, some of the computer power supply parts were not easy to get, even if you can find one the price are most likely expensive than buying a new unit. This haven’t include shipping cost you ordered from oversea! However, you may still can repair the power supply if you wish to hoping that the faulty parts were not the power IC and the secondary side IC’s and only minor components that need replacement. You have to justify your precious time whether the computer power supply problem worth it to repair or not

PC Post Card



PC post card is a diagnostic test card to troubleshoot cpu motherboard. I used to repair and troubleshoot cpu motherboard many years back when i was starting out in the pc repair line. The manufacturer supplied me with a pc post card and i plugged it in the motherboard slot. When i power it “on” i could see numbers running (counting) shown by the LED display at the card itself. Assuming it stopped at 40 then you have to refer to the manual book to seacrh for what’s 40 mean.

If the 40 explained in the manual was Ram then your concentration would be in the Ram are. This save your time especially when a motherboard have the symptom of no display and you do not know where to begin to check. Introduction to the Personal Computer
The technical term for a PC is micro data processor. That name is no longer in common use. However, it places the PC in the bottom of the computer hierarchy:

■Mainframes are the very largest computers – million dollar machines, which can occupy more than one room, An example is IBM model 390.
■Minicomputers are large powerful machines. They typically serve a network of simple terminals. IBM’s AS/400 is an example of a minicomputer.
■Workstations are powerful user machines. They have the power to handle complex engineering applications. They use the UNIX or sometimes the NT operating system. Workstations can be equipped with powerful RISC processors like Digital Alpha or MIPS.
■PC’s are the Benjamin’s in this order: Small inexpensive, mass produced computers. They work on DOS, Windows, or similar operating systems. They are used for standard applications.
The point of this history is, that Benjamin has grown. He has actually been promoted to captain! Today’s PC’s are just as powerful as minicomputers and mainframes were not too many years ago. A powerful PC can easily keep up with the expensive workstations. How have we advanced this far?

The PC’s success
The PC came out in 1981. In less than 20 years, it has totally changed our means of communicating. When the PC was introduced by IBM, it was just one of many different micro data processors. However, the PC caught on. In 5-7 years, it conquered the market. From being an IBM compatible PC, it became the standard.

If we look at early PC’s, they are characterized by a number of features. Those were instrumental in creating the PC success.

■The PC was from the start standardized and had an open architecture.
■It was well documented and had great possibilities for expansion.
■It was inexpensive, simple and robust (definitely not advanced).
The PC started as IBM’s baby. It was their design, built over an Intel processor (8088) and fitted to Microsoft’s simple operating system MS-DOS.
Since the design was well documented, other companies entered the market. They could freely copy the central system software (BIOS) and the ISA bus, since they were not patented. Slowly, a myriad of companies developed, manufacturing IBM compatible PC’s and components for them.
The Clone was born. A clone is a copy-machine. A machine, which can do precisely the same as the original (read Big Blue – IBM). Some of the components (for example the hard disk) may be identical to the original. However, the Clone has another name (Compaq, Olivetti, etc.), or it has no name at all. This is the case with “the real clones.” Today, we differentiate between:

■Brand names, PC’s from IBM, Compaq, AST, etc. Companies which are so big, so they develop their own hardware components.
■Clones, which are built from standard components. Anyone can make a clone.
Since the basic technology is shared by all PC’s, I will start with a review of that

The Computer Start-Up Process

When you turn power on, several things happen in the PC:

■You hear the fan motor starting. There are one or more cooling fans in the PC. They produce a whirring sound.
■After a few seconds, text starts to scroll on the screen.
■Now the PC tests and counts the RAM. You see a number on the screen. It increases in size.
To understand the working of the PC, it is useful to study the PC start-up process. Those are events, which take place from power-on until the PC is ready to work. Remember, the PC can do nothing without receiving instructions. These instructions are commands, which are sent to the CPU. During start-up, the PC reads the commands in this sequence:

■First it receives commands from the ROM chips. Those chips are inherent in any computer. They contain the POST and BIOS instructions, which we will look at shortly.
■Next, the operating system is read from the hard disk (or from floppy drive A). This is called the boot process.
The ROM chips
ROM (Read Only Memory). The ROM chips are on the system board. They contain system software. System software are instructions, which enable the PC to coordinate the functions of various computer components.
The ROM chips contain instructions, which are specific for that particular system board. Those instructions will remain in the PC throughout its life. They will usually not be altered. Primarily, they are start-up instructions. There are different parts in the start-up instructions. For most users, they are all woven together. You can differentiate between:

■POST (Power On Self Test)
■The Set-up instructions, which connect with the CMOS instructions
■BIOS instructions, which connect with the various hardware peripherals
■The Boot instructions, which calls the operating system (DOS, OS/2, or Windows)
All these instructions are in ROM chips, and they are activated on by one during start-up. Let us look at each part.

POST
Power On Self Test is the first instruction executed during start-up. It checks the PC components and that everything works. You can recognize it during the RAM test, which occurs as soon as you turn power on.
As users, we have only limited ability to manipulate the POST instructions. But certain system boards enable the user to order a quick system check. Some enable the user to disable the RAM test, thereby shortening the duration of the POST. The duration of the POST can vary considerably in different PC’s. On the IBM PC 300 computer, it is very slow. But you can disrupt it by pressing [Esc].
If POST detects errors in the system, it will write error messages on the screen. If the monitor is not ready, or if the error is in the video card, it will also sound a pattern of beeps (for example 3 short and one long) to identify the error to the user. POST also reads those user instructions, which are found in CMOS:

CMOS
CMOS (Complimentary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) is a small amount of memory in a special RAM chip. Its memory is
maintained with electric power from a small battery. Certain system data are stored in this chip. They must be read to make the PC operable. There may be 100 to 200 bytes of data regarding date, time, floppy and hard disk drives, and much more. CMOS data can be divided in two groups:

■Data, which POST can not find during the system test.
■Data, which contain user options.
For example, POST cannot by itself find sufficient information about the floppy drive(s). Floppy drives are so “dumb,” that
POST cannot read whether they are floppy drives or not, nor what type. About the same goes for IDE hard disks, while EIDE hard disks are a little more “intelligent,” However, POST still needs assistance to identify them 100% correctly.
The same goes for RAM: POST can count how much RAM is in the PC. However, POST cannot detect whether it is FPM, EDO or SD RAM. Since the CPU and BIOS reads data from RAM chips differently, depending on the RAM type, that type must be identified.

Configuration
The PC must be configured, be supplied with this information. That is done in the factory or store, where it is assembled. This information is stored in CMOS, where they stay. CMOS data only need to be updated, when different or additional hardware components are installed. This could be a different type hard disk or floppy disks or an new RAM type, Often he user can do this.
Other data in CMOS contain various user options. Those are data, which you can write to CMOS. For example, you can adjust date and time, which the PC then adjusts every second. You can also choose between different system parameters.
Maybe you want a short system check instead of a long one. Or if you want the PC to try to boot from hard disk C before trying floppy disk A, or vice versa. These options can be written to CMOS.
Many of the options are of no interest to the ordinary user. These are options, which regard controller chips on the system board, which can be configured in different ways. Ordinarily, there is no need to make such changes. The system board manufacturer has already selected the optimal configurations. They recommend in their manuals, that you do not change these default settings.
We can conclude, that CMOS data are essential system data, which are vital for operation of the PC. Their special feature is, that they are user adjustable. Adjustments to CMOS are made during start-up

Simple Analog To Digital Converter electronic circuit diagram



Normally analogue-to-digital con-verter (ADC) needs interfacing through a microprocessor to convert analogue data into digital format. This requires hardware and necessary software, resulting in increased complexity and hence the total cost. The circuit of A-to-D converter shown here is configured around ADC 0808, avoiding the use of a microprocessor. The ADC 0808 is an 8-bit A-to-D converter, having data lines D0-D7. It works on the principle of successive approximation. It has a total of eight analogue input channels, out of which any one can be selected using address lines A, B and C. Here, in this case, input channel IN0 is selected by grounding A, B and C address lines. Usually the control signals EOC (end of conversion), SC (start conversion), ALE (address latch enable) and OE (output enable) are interfaced by means of a microprocessor. However, the circuit shown here is built to operate in its continuous mode without using any microprocessor. Therefore the input control signals ALE and OE, being active-high, are tied to Vcc (+5 volts). The input control signal SC, being active-low, initiates start of conversion at falling edge of the pulse, whereas the output signal EOC becomes high after completion of digitisation. This EOC output is coupled to SC input, where falling edge of EOC output acts as SC input to direct the ADC to start the conversion. As the conversion starts, EOC signal goes high. At next clock pulse EOC output again goes low, and hence SC is enabled to start the next conversion. Thus, it provides continuous 8-bit digital output corresponding to instantaneous value of analogue input. The maximum level of analogue input voltage should be appropriately scaled down below positive reference (+5V) level. The ADC 0808 IC requires clock signal of typically 550 kHz, which can be easily derived from an astable multivibrator constructed using 7404 inverter gates. In order to visualise the digital output, the row of eight LEDs (LED1 through LED8) have been used, wherein each LED is connected to respective data lines D0 through D7. Since ADC works in the continuous mode, it displays digital output as soon as analogue input is applied. The decimal equivalent digital output value D for a given analogue input voltage Vin can be calculated from the relationship

R5000 Computer Interface electronic circuit diagram








Description:

This circuit is a modified version of an original interface on QSL Net. It is a fully isolated interface allowing computer control of the Trio/Kenwood R5000 receiver. Separate software is needed to control the receiver.

Notes:

The R5000 receiver is an all-mode full featured receiver covering 30-30MHz. This receiver is now discontinued but there are still plenty to be found on the second hand market. It has an analogue field strength meter, two built-in noise reducers and a 6 Pin DIN output on the back panel. It is this DIN connector that interfaces to your humble PC allowing software control over the receiver.

The R5000 receiver outputs are TTL level compatible, but to interface to the PC serial port, RS232 standards are required. All the work is done here by the MAX232 IC working from a single %V regulated supply this IC will buffer and shift the TTL levels of the receiver to the standard required by the RS232 serial port. The output signals are shown correctly wired for a 9 Pin D type connector, most PC have at least two of these connectors on the rear.

The signals from the R5000 receiver are physically isolated by 4 opto-isolators, SFH618. The receivers transmit and Ready to Send (RTS) outputs have series 150 ohm resistors before the isolators. The receive and Clear to Send (CTS) inputs, are fed direct to the opto isolator inputs. All the opto-isolator does is relay on/off conditions between input and output, but as there is no direct connection between input and output, physical and spacial separation is achieved.

Sadly the R5000 is discontinued, but there are still plenty available on the second had market. As for control software, a search on Google should prove useful
